MRT faulty operation causes passengers to walk along railway, 6 hurt

Who would have thought that a commotion will happen along the very railings of the Metro Rail Transit (MRT) that will force passengers to alight from the coaches and walk to the nearest station for safety?

After leaving the Arareta Center-Cubao station, the pilot of MRT train #14 decided to stop the train at around 9:52 a.m. when smokes came beneath the coach due to the locked up brake system of the train. The passengers panicked when the pilot checked the smoke. They were let out and had to walk along the railway and exit at the Santolan-Anapolis station.

Six passengers were hurt and had to be hold for two hours in the ticketing station.

Two days ago, an escalator at the Ayala station of MRT stopped abruptly due to a fault roller. The incident caused some of the people riding the escalator lose their balance as nine were injured.

MRT has been operating since 11 years. Trains have a 25-year lifespan, but it seems the fare hike for MRT and LRT (Light Rail Transit) is truly reasonable for improvement of maintenance and facilities.

  1. Hi Ms. Jonell Estillore,

Magandang araw po. We hope it will be ok with you for our group (IBON Foundation, socio-economic research institution) to filter your ‘people walking on railways’ photo to use in an infographic on MRT deterioration. I will make sure to put your name on the photo for proper credit. Magpapadala po kami ng copy sa inyo. Salamat!
